Starfield AL 63S DOL Classic Select

Deze is gemaakt in de Fujigen fabriek in opdracht van Ibanez. Eerst wat achtergrond informatie: Starfield was een spinoff van Ibanez, waarmee laatstgenoemde probeerde een antwoord te vinden op de opkomst van PRS, die op hoog kwaliteitsniveau klassieke ontwerp elementen combineerde met hedendaagse inzichten.
Starfield is als merk nimmer een succes geworden en is in 1995 opgehouden te bestaan. Waarschijnlijk door de hoge productiekosten en de relatief geringe belangstelling voor zo’n nieuw merk. Maar, vergis je niet.. Starfield gitaren waren niet goedkoop en voldeden aan zeer hoge kwaliteitseisen.
Dit specifieke exemplaar betreft het zeldzame topmodel uit de “Altair Classic Select serie” en heeft de volgende specificaties: Body uit Saman/Monkey Pod (volgens de folder zorgt deze hawaiaanse houtsoort voor “enviable mids”. De slanke C shape hals is uit één stuk kwartiersgezaagd rock maple, de toets is uit Indisch palisander en heeft een Gibson radius van 12”.
De halsaanhechting is heel mooi afgerond, en de body heeft aan de achterzijde een diepe uitsparing, waardoor je die hoogste 22e fret probleemloos kunt bereiken.
Over de hardware is nagedacht: De FS 100 tremolo heeft geen scherpe delen en voelt heerlijk aan voor de rechterhand. Bovendien heeft het blok een diepe boring waardoor de onnodige snaarlengte wordt beperkt. Ook zijn de zadels zijdelings begrensd voor de beste stemstabilitiet. Dit laatste wordt ondersteund door de GOTOH magnum lock mechanieken en topkam uit grafiet.
De mensuur is 25” en zit (net als die van PRS) precies in tussen Gibson en Fender.
Electronica: Drie lipstick pickups (vintage helder maar niet schel), een vijfstanden schakelaar en master volume en tone. Als je een 60’s Surftone zoekt maar toch een hedendaagse bespeelbaarheid dan is dit je werkpaard.
De conditie van dit instrument is buitengewoon, het is nauwelijks bespeeld en verkeert bijna in nieuwstaat!
Bij aanschaf wordt deze voorzien van snaren naar wens van de koper en daarop volledig afgesteld, waarbij de aanstaande eigenaar mag kiezen tussen een zwevende of vast afgestelde tremolo.

This one was made in the Fujigen factory in Japan to specifications of Ibanez. First some background information: Starfield was Ibanez’s answer to the rise of PRS. At the time PRS was very succesfull in combining Classic Fender and Gibson design elements together, and executing these to high quality modern age production standards.
Starfield never became succesfull as a brand, and production was stopped in 1995. Probably due to high production costs and a relatively low interest in such a new unknown brand. But make no mistake; Starfield guitars where never cheap, and had to live up to very high quality standards.
This one is the rare flagship model from the “Altair Classic Select range”. It features a Saman/ Monkeypod body. This hawaiian wood gives “enviable mids” . The very slender C shape neck is made of a single piece of quarter sawn rock maple, and the fingerboard is made of Indian rosewood and has a familiar Gibson style 12” radius.
The “all access” neck joint is well rounded off and complemented with a deep chamfer in the body to make high fret acces a dream.
The hardware has been well designed: The FS 100 Tremolo has no sharp edges and feels comfortable to the right hand. The block has the strings anchored as close to the saddles as possible to minimise dead string length. Also the sideways movement of the saddles has been limited to get the best possible tuning stability from a non locking tremolo system.
This is complimented by GOTOH magnum locking tuning machines and a graphite nut.
The scale is 25”, right in between Fender and Gibson and exactly PRS.
The electronics consit out of three Lipstick Pickups that sound bright and vintage, but never harsh. A classic 5 way pickup selector and master volume and tone controls.
If you’re looking for a 60’s surf tone with today’s virtuoso playability, this is your platform.
The condition of this guitar is almost new, it has very seldomly been played.
At purchase (or just before) this guitar will be set up to the preferred string gauge/type, and the new owner may choose between a floating or a fixed tremolo setup.
